Russian Twist

This one hits the sides of your waist. Hold a water bottle and it gets a lot harder.

Level Intermediate
Equipment None (or a water bottle)
Sets and reps 3 sets x 20-30
Works on Obliques (side abs)

How to do it

  1. Sit on the floor with knees bent and heels down.
  2. Lean your upper body back slightly so your body forms a V shape.
  3. Clasp your hands and rotate from one side to the other.
  4. Each side counts as one - both together make a rep.

Common mistakes

  • × Only moving your arms - your shoulders and upper back should turn too.
  • × Going too fast - you lose control of the movement.
  • × Rounding your back - keep it straight.
💡
One thing that matters

Lifting your feet off the floor doubles the difficulty. Try it once the basic version feels easy.

Questions

Russian Twist, answered

Do Russian twists give you a smaller waist?

No. They train the obliques, which are muscles at the side of your waist - building them makes that area firmer, not narrower. Waist size comes down with fat loss, not with twisting.

Do I need a weight for Russian twists?

Not at first. Lifting your feet off the floor makes it harder without any weight at all. A water bottle is plenty when you do want more.

Why does my back hurt doing Russian twists?

You are rounding forward and twisting from the lower back instead of the ribs. Sit tall, lean back to about 45 degrees, and rotate your shoulders and ribcage rather than yanking your arms across.
