Torso Twists

Turn the upper body left and right with the arms loose. It gets the middle of your back moving, which sitting all day takes away.

Level Beginner
Equipment None
Sets and reps 2 sets x 30 sec
Works on Waist, mid back

How to do it

  1. Stand with feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent.
  2. Let your arms hang loose and relaxed.
  3. Turn your upper body to the right and let the arms swing round with it.
  4. Turn to the left the same way and keep a steady rhythm.

Common mistakes

  • × Twisting hard and fast - the spine does not like being whipped.
  • × Letting the feet turn with the body - they stay planted.
  • × Locking the knees straight.
💡
One thing that matters

Let the arms be dead weight. They should swing because the body turned, not because you swung them.

Questions

Torso Twists, answered

What do torso twists warm up?

The mid back, which is where rotation is meant to come from. Getting it moving before core work means the lower back does less of the twisting.

Should my hips turn too?

Only slightly. Keep the hips mostly facing forward and let the ribcage do the turning - that is what makes it a mid back movement rather than a whole body swing.

How fast?

Controlled. Fast, loose twisting with momentum is one of the easier ways to tweak a lower back on a cold body.
