Sit Ups

The full version of a crunch - your whole back comes off the floor. Harder than it looks if you do it without swinging.

Level Intermediate
Equipment None
Sets and reps 3 sets x 12-15
Works on Whole front of the abs

How to do it

  1. Lie on your back, knees bent, feet flat and tucked under something if they lift.
  2. Cross your arms over your chest or rest your hands beside your ears.
  3. Curl up one bone at a time until your chest is near your knees.
  4. Lower down with the same control - do not drop.

Common mistakes

  • × Throwing the arms forward for momentum - that is the hips doing the work, not the abs.
  • × Yanking the head forward - keep a fist sized gap between chin and chest.
  • × Bouncing off the floor at the bottom - pause instead.

One thing that matters

If you cannot do a full one yet, do crunches for a few weeks first. There is no rush.

Breathing

Out on the way up, in on the way down. A full sit-up needs more air than a crunch - do not rush the bottom.

Questions

Sit Ups, answered

Sit-ups or crunches - which is better?

Crunches keep the load on the abs. A full sit-up brings the hip flexors in heavily, which is why it feels easier at the top and why people with lower back trouble are usually told to stick to crunches.

Should I anchor my feet?

Better not to. Hooking your feet under something lets the hip flexors take over and turns it into a hip exercise with an ab-shaped movement.

How many sit-ups a day to see abs?

None, on their own. Visible abs are a body fat number, not a sit-up number. Most men see them somewhere around 10 to 12 percent body fat, most women a good deal higher - and getting there is a kitchen job.
