Side Plank

A plank turned on its side. This is the one exercise that hits the muscles down the sides of your waist properly.

Level Intermediate
Equipment None
Sets and reps 3 sets x 20-40 sec each side
Works on Side abs, hips

How to do it

  1. Lie on one side with your elbow directly under your shoulder.
  2. Stack your feet on top of each other, or put the top foot in front for balance.
  3. Lift your hips so your body makes one straight line from head to feet.
  4. Hold, breathe, then swap sides and do the same time on the other side.

Common mistakes

  • × Letting the hips drop towards the floor - that is where the work goes.
  • × Rolling forward or backward - keep chest and hips facing straight ahead.
  • × Doing one side longer than the other - always match them.
💡
One thing that matters

Too hard on your feet? Drop the bottom knee to the floor. It is the same exercise, made easier.

Questions

Side Plank, answered

What does a side plank actually work?

The obliques and the deep muscle that stops your torso folding sideways - the thing that keeps you upright when you carry a heavy bag in one hand. It is one of the few core exercises that trains resisting movement rather than making it.

My wrist hurts in a side plank. What do I do?

Come down onto your forearm instead of your hand. It takes the wrist out entirely and is the standard version anyway.

Should both sides be equally strong?

They usually are not, and that is worth knowing. Do the weaker side first and match the stronger side to it rather than the other way round.
