Mountain Climbers

A plank and a sprint at the same time. Your abs work while your heart rate climbs.

Level Intermediate
Equipment None
Sets and reps 3 sets x 30-45 sec
Works on Abs, shoulders, heart

How to do it

  1. Start in a push up position.
  2. Drive one knee quickly towards your chest.
  3. Switch legs, driving the other knee forward as the first goes back.
  4. Build up to a running rhythm.

Common mistakes

  • × Letting the hips rise - shoulders, hips and heels stay in one line.
  • × Shifting your hands around - keep them planted.
  • × Only half bringing the knee in - drive it right up towards the chest.
💡
One thing that matters

Keeping your hips down matters far more than going fast.

Questions

Mountain Climbers, answered

Are mountain climbers cardio or core?

Both, and which one depends entirely on speed. Slow and controlled makes it a core exercise. Fast makes it conditioning with the core holding on.

Why do my hips rise up?

Fatigue, or going too fast. When the hips pike up, the plank position is gone and so is most of the benefit. Slow down or stop the set.

Do they hurt your wrists?

They can, because your weight sits on your hands for the whole set. Spread your fingers wide and press through the whole palm rather than the heel of the hand. If it still hurts, swap them for squat thrusts, which spend far less time loading the wrist.
