Leg Swings

Swing one leg forward and back while holding a wall. It loosens the hip without holding a stretch, which is exactly what you want before training.

Level Beginner
Equipment Wall or chair
Sets and reps 2 sets x 12 each leg
Works on Hips, hamstrings

How to do it

  1. Hold a wall or chair with one hand and stand on your left leg.
  2. Swing the right leg forward and back in a relaxed arc.
  3. Start small and let the range grow with each swing.
  4. Do the reps, then swap legs.

Common mistakes

  • × Forcing a big swing on the first rep.
  • × Bending the upper body forward and back with the leg.
  • × Tensing the swinging leg - let it hang loose.

One thing that matters

Never hold a long stretch before training. Moving warm ups like this one are what actually help.

How much

Sets and reps for Leg Swings

Where you are Aim for
Just starting 2 sets x 8 each leg, holding a wall
The standard 2 sets x 12 each leg
Once it is easy 2 sets x 15 each leg, bigger range
🌬️
Breathing

Relaxed and even. If you are holding your breath, you are swinging too hard.

Questions

Leg Swings, answered

Are leg swings a stretch?

No, and the difference matters. This is a moving warm-up that takes the hip through range - hold a stretch before training and you can lose a little power. Save the held stretches for afterwards.

How high should I swing?

Only as high as it goes without the lower back arching. Range grows across the set - the last swing should be higher than the first, not the other way round.

Should I hold something?

Yes. A wall or a chair means the leg can move freely instead of your body fighting for balance.
