Ankle Rolls

Circles with the foot. Nobody thinks about ankles until one rolls in the middle of a set of jump squats.

Works on Ankles, calves

How to do it

  1. Stand on one leg, holding a wall if you need to.
  2. Lift the other foot slightly and point the toes.
  3. Draw slow circles with the toes, using the whole range of the ankle.
  4. Half the time one way, half the other, then swap feet.

Common mistakes

  • × Moving the whole leg instead of just the ankle.
  • × Going fast and small.
  • × Skipping this before jumping exercises.

Questions

Ankle Rolls, answered

Why bother warming up ankles?

Squats, lunges and every jump land through the ankle. It is a small joint carrying a lot, and it takes fifteen seconds a side to prepare.

My ankles crack. Is that a problem?

Painless cracking is normal and usually just gas moving in the joint. Pain, swelling or giving way is not, and that needs looking at.

Do these help with balance?

A little, over time. Single leg work - lunges, step-ups, single leg deadlifts - does far more.
