Single Leg Deadlift

Stand on one leg and hinge forward while the other leg goes back. It builds the back of the thigh and your balance in one go.

Level Advanced
Equipment None
Sets and reps 3 sets x 8-10 each leg
Works on Hamstrings, glutes, balance

How to do it

  1. Stand on your right leg with a soft bend in that knee.
  2. Hinge forward at the hip, letting the left leg extend straight behind you.
  3. Go down until your body makes a T shape, or as far as balance allows.
  4. Squeeze the right glute to come back up. Finish the set, then swap.

Common mistakes

  • × Rounding the back - the spine stays flat from head to hips.
  • × Letting the raised hip roll open towards the ceiling - keep it square.
  • × Locking the standing knee straight.

One thing that matters

Balance wobbling? Touch one finger to a wall. That is enough to steady you without taking the work away.

Questions

Single Leg Deadlift, answered

What is a single leg deadlift for?

Hamstrings, glutes and balance in one movement. It is the closest a bodyweight programme gets to the hinge pattern - bending at the hip rather than the knee - which is what you use every time you pick something up.

I cannot balance at all. What do I do?

Rest two fingers on a wall or a chair back. That is enough support to stay upright and little enough that your leg still does the work. Most people can let go within a fortnight.

Should my back be rounded?

No. Flat back, chest pointing at the floor, hips travelling backwards. If your back rounds, you have gone too far forward - stop where the hamstring stretch begins.
