Jump Squats

Add a jump to your squat and you build power while burning far more calories.

Level Advanced
Equipment None
Sets and reps 3 sets x 12-15
Works on Thighs, glutes, heart

How to do it

  1. Lower into a normal squat.
  2. From the bottom, drive up explosively into a jump.
  3. Land softly on the balls of your feet.
  4. Flow straight into the next squat as you land.

Common mistakes

  • × Landing with locked knees - always land with a slight bend.
  • × Landing loudly - that noise is impact going into your knees.
  • × Letting the knees cave inwards on landing - push them out over the toes.
💡
One thing that matters

If you have any history of knee trouble, skip this and stick to normal squats.

Questions

Jump Squats, answered

Are jump squats bad for your knees?

Not on their own, but the landing is where it goes wrong. Land on the whole foot with soft knees and sink straight into the next squat. Landing stiff and flat is what hurts. Skip them if you have existing knee trouble.

Do jump squats burn more calories?

Per minute, yes - they are closer to sprinting than to lifting. That is not the main reason to do them; the main reason is power, which normal squats do not train.

Can I do these in a flat?

Be considerate about the floor below you. Squats with a three second lowering phase give a similar leg challenge with no noise at all.
